Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has dismissed Teymur Mehdiyev from the post of Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations, according to a presidential decree published on Monday.
The decision comes just several weeks after Teymur’s father, Ramiz Mehdiyev, the powerful former head of the Presidential Administration, was formally charged with treason, attempts to seize state power, and legalization of criminally obtained property.
As reported earlier, the Sabail District Court of Baku placed the 86-year-old ex-official under four months of house arrest pending investigation. He faces charges under:
Article 278.1 – acts aimed at seizing state power
Article 274 – treason
Article 193-1.3.2 – legalization of property obtained by criminal means
The unprecedented case marks the first time a former top state official of Mehdiyev’s rank has been charged with crimes against the state.
Political observers note that the dismissal of Teymur Mehdiyev is widely viewed as a direct consequence of the high-profile criminal case against his father and part of a broader dismantling of the networks associated with the old political establishment.
