The number of children diagnosed with cancer in Azerbaijan has doubled over the past 14 years, lawmakers said during a parliamentary session.
According to official statistics, 21,088 cancer patients were registered nationwide in 2000. By 2024, that figure had risen to 73,875. Deputies noted that childhood cancer cases account for a growing share of this increase.
Members of parliament also discussed upcoming changes to the oncology care system. Lawmakers stressed that private medical clinics will only be allowed to provide cancer treatment after passing strict licensing and quality controls.
Health officials emphasized that the expansion of private-sector involvement will not be automatic and will be subject to rigorous oversight, unified clinical standards, and transparent financing mechanisms.
