Car imports to Azerbaijan increased sharply over the past year, but the growth has not translated into lower prices for consumers, according to official statistics and market analysts.
Data from the State Customs Committee show that the number of imported passenger and other vehicles rose by 38 percent year-on-year. The bulk of imports consisted of environmentally friendly models: hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric vehicles.
Market experts say the surge in imports has significantly expanded supply, with far more cars now available at auto markets than a year earlier. However, despite the increased volume, retail prices have continued to climb, with average increases ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 manats depending on the model and segment.
According to automotive specialists, demand remains strongest for hybrid and electric vehicles, which are seen as more economical amid fuel costs and regulatory changes. At the same time, analysts note that the market has not experienced a true price correction, even as availability has improved.
Transportation experts attribute the growth in imports to several factors, including relative economic stability, increased mobility in liberated territories, and ongoing reforms in the taxi sector that favor newer, environmentally cleaner vehicles. Older cars are gradually being phased out, driving demand for newer imports.
However, price pressures are expected to persist. Analysts warn that the expiration of tax and customs incentives for eco-friendly vehicles at the start of 2026 may push prices higher in the coming months. While prices are expected to remain broadly stable until late March, further developments will depend on tax policy, global supply chains, and regulations in exporting countries.
In 2025 alone, Azerbaijan imported more than 123,000 vehicles worth approximately $2.38 billion, underscoring the scale of the market – and the challenge facing consumers hoping for more affordable prices.
