Bucharest and Baku Advance Green Energy and Transport Projects

Trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Romania has reached $700 million, Romanian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Vasile Soare said during an official reception in Baku marking Romania’s National Day.

Soare recalled that Romania was the first EU member state to sign a strategic partnership agreement with Azerbaijan back in 2009. He noted that bilateral trade in 2024 amounted to $700 million and that the figure for 2025 is “practically identical.”

The ambassador emphasized that the upcoming signing in Constanța of an intergovernmental agreement between Romania, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan on the creation of the Black Sea–Caspian Sea international transport route will significantly strengthen the Middle Corridor’s role.

“This will allow the ports of Baku and Constanța to emerge as transport hubs providing direct connectivity between Europe and the Caucasus–Central Asia region,”
Soare said.

Growing Strategic Importance

The envoy also highlighted Romania’s active engagement in major international organizations such as NATO and the European Union, as well as the country’s accession to the Schengen Area in 2025.

According to Soare, Azerbaijan and Romania have achieved substantial progress across 34 years of diplomatic relations, including in political cooperation, diplomacy, trade, energy, transport, education, and socio-cultural exchange.

He described Azerbaijan as a country “with great potential and ambitious objectives” both domestically and internationally, underscoring its growing importance as a transport and connectivity hub linking Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.

Support for Peace and Regional Stability

Soare reiterated Romania’s support for Azerbaijan’s efforts to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the South Caucasus.

He also pointed to the ongoing Green Energy Corridor initiative – the Azerbaijan-Georgia–Romania–Hungary project – which aims to deliver clean energy from the Caspian region directly to the European market:

“This project will make a significant contribution to Europe’s energy security,”
the ambassador said.
