BP is set to expand its cooperation with Azerbaijan on energy projects, according to Bakhtiyar Aslanbayli, the company’s vice president for the Caspian region. He made the remarks during the first Azerbaijan–UK Political Dialogue hosted at ADA University in Baku.
Aslanbayli highlighted that Britain was among the first Western nations to recognize Azerbaijan’s independence in March 1992, noting that bilateral ties have since strengthened across investment, economic growth, and knowledge exchange.
“Today’s dialogue underlines the commitment of both countries to deepen cooperation and mutual understanding,” he said.
The BP executive emphasized that with support from the Azerbaijani government, the company has implemented world-class energy projects that reshaped the Caspian region and bolstered energy security not only for neighbors but also for European states.
Looking ahead, Aslanbayli underscored BP’s role in Azerbaijan’s energy transition, pointing to the landmark decision to move forward with the Shafag solar power plant in Jabrayil district. The 240-MW facility will be built on territories recently returned to Azerbaijan.
“We are proud that BP has signed a number of important agreements in Azerbaijan supporting the country’s clean energy drive. The Shafag project is both commercially and technically unique and symbolizes the next chapter of our partnership,” Aslanbayli said.
