More than 370 Chinese companies are currently active in Azerbaijan, with the total volume of Chinese investments exceeding $950 million, according to Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev.
In an interview with People’s Daily Online during the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, Mustafayev highlighted the expanding partnership between the two countries across multiple strategic sectors – including green energy, smart grids, electric buses, and industrial parks.
.
“A number of Memorandums of Understanding have already been signed in fields such as digital economy, intelligent logistics, the Internet of Things, industrial digitalization, technological innovation, and human resource exchange,” Mustafayev said.
He noted that digital transformation has become a key pillar of Azerbaijan’s governance, business development, and modernization of public services:
“We are eager to study China’s advanced experience in digital economy, smart city construction, and low-carbon green development – and to deepen our strategic cooperation even further.”
According to the deputy prime minister, relations between Azerbaijan and China are at their strongest point in history. China is currently Azerbaijan’s fourth-largest trading partner and its leading source of imports. From January to September 2025, bilateral trade reached $3.4 billion, marking a 28% increase year-on-year – a clear sign of deepening economic engagement and strong growth potential.
Mustafayev also emphasized the importance of the China International Import Expo, describing it as a vital platform for joint development and global economic stability. Azerbaijan’s participation, he said, helps local companies access the Chinese market and increase the international recognition of Azerbaijani products.
During the expo, Mustafayev took part in the presentation of the World Openness Report 2025 and an international seminar held as part of the 8th Hongqiao International Economic Forum.
“China’s commitment to openness, inclusivity, and mutual benefit continues to drive global trade and strengthen international value chains. The Belt and Road Initiative has further enhanced Eurasian connectivity, creating ideal conditions for Azerbaijan to play a central role as a regional logistics and transport hub,” he concluded.
