Belgium places high value on Azerbaijan’s growing role in strengthening Europe’s energy security and supports deeper cooperation between Baku and the European Union, Belgian Ambassador Julien de Frepon said at a reception in Baku marking Belgium’s King’s Day.
“We fully support the further deepening of relations between the European Union and Azerbaijan,” the diplomat noted.
.
“These expanding ties reflect our shared commitment to building interconnected, open, predictable and stable relations based on cooperation. In today’s world, where some forces attempt to undermine these principles, strengthening them is especially important.”
De Frepon highlighted the positive trajectory of bilateral relations, noting that Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo’s first official visit to Baku marked “an important milestone” for the partnership. Since then, cooperation has expanded across multiple sectors.
He recalled the effective coordination between the two governments during the transit of Belgian nationals and expressed gratitude for Azerbaijan’s assistance in evacuating Belgian diplomatic staff from Iran during the recent military escalation.
“This support was highly appreciated,” he said.
According to the ambassador, Azerbaijan–Belgium relations are underpinned by steady political dialogue and active people-to-people contacts, which “enrich both societies.” He also noted the successful activity of Belgian companies in Azerbaijan in fields such as energy, logistics, construction and port infrastructure.
Turning to regional developments, De Frepon welcomed the recent breakthroughs in the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, describing them as a foundation for a long-term and sustainable peace.
“I congratulate Azerbaijan’s leadership on the decisive steps taken recently to normalize relations with Armenia,” he said.
“The normalization agreement, ongoing projects to restore communications, and the latest confidence-building measures are creating a solid basis for lasting peace. This will benefit the entire region and beyond, serving as a source of hope and inspiration.”
