The temporary flag of the Sumo World Championship will be officially handed over to Azerbaijan during the global tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, this September.
Vice President of the Japanese Association of Martial Arts and Culture Ulvi Agamirov told Report that he will take part in the handover ceremony as part of preparations for the 2026 Sumo World Championship in Baku.
Agamirov recently participated in the presentation of the upcoming Baku-hosted championship at Sumo Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan.
“On August 5, in the Azerbaijani pavilion at the Osaka Expo, we held a presentation of the World Championship, which was very well received by visitors. The event’s promotional video and official mascot, Azumo, have already been unveiled. The mascot embodies both strength and hospitality,” he said.
According to Agamirov, preparations for the championship have already begun, with organizational and promotional efforts underway to welcome the world’s top sumo athletes to the Azerbaijani capital in 2026.
