Baku Secures UN Roles Shaping Global Demographic and Social Policy

Azerbaijan has been elected as a member of two major United Nations bodies – the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) for the 2026–2030 term, and the Commission for Social Development (CSocD) for 2025–2029.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, the elections were held on December 10 at UN headquarters in New York.

Both bodies function under the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the organization’s principal platform for economic and social policy.

Azerbaijan is already serving as an ECOSOC member for the 2025–2027 cycle.
The CPD plays a central role in shaping global approaches to population dynamics, demographic trends, migration, urbanization, and sustainable development.

The CSocD, meanwhile, focuses on social policy, social protection systems, the rights of vulnerable groups, and improving overall well-being.

Representation on these commissions, the MFA noted, will allow Azerbaijan to highlight its progress in social protection reforms, innovations in public services, poverty reduction efforts, and national priorities aimed at improving living standards. It will also expand the country’s ability to contribute to – and collaborate in – the UN’s ongoing social and development agenda.
