Baku has been officially named the World Capital of Sports for 2026, receiving the title from Monaco under a decision by the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation (ACES Europe).

The designation was announced during a formal ceremony held in the Azerbaijani capital, marking the official transfer of the title. The event was attended by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sports Farid Gayibov, Vice President of the National Olympic Committee Chingiz Huseynzade, Head of the Baku City Executive Authority Eldar Azizov, and other senior officials.

A delegation from ACES Europe, led by its president Gian Francesco Lupattelli and Secretary General Hugo Alonso, also took part in the ceremony. Minister Farid Gayibov described the transfer of the title as a major milestone for Azerbaijan’s sports sector.

“Baku has a long record of hosting top-level international competitions,” Gayibov said. “Formula 1 events have been held here for years, and the city successfully hosted the first European Games and the Islamic Solidarity Games. We are proud that the World Capital of Sports title has now passed from Monaco to Baku.”

ACES Europe President Gian Francesco Lupattelli said Baku was well positioned to hold the title, citing both its infrastructure and experience.

“We know Baku as an important global city, not only in sports but across many fields,” Lupattelli said. “Today, we are pleased to officially award the World Capital of Sports title to Baku, and we are confident the city will meet this responsibility.”

According to Elnur Mammadov, head of the sports department at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, a series of international sporting events are planned in connection with Baku’s new status.

ACES Europe Secretary General Hugo Alonso also highlighted the city’s readiness, noting that Monaco formally handed over a commemorative plaque to Baku as the next World Capital of Sports.

“Baku has the necessary sports infrastructure and a proven record of hosting international competitions at a high standard,” Alonso said.

Baku Mayor Eldar Azizov said the designation reflects years of sustained investment in sports development.

“This is a significant and joyful event for our city,” Azizov said. “Thanks to the consistent attention and support of President Ilham Aliyev, sports in Azerbaijan continue to develop. Baku’s selection as World Capital of Sports is a clear result of this long-term policy.”

Under the decision of ACES Europe, Baku will officially hold the World Capital of Sports title throughout 2026, during which the city is expected to host numerous international sporting events.
