Azerbaijan hosted its first Comic Con this week, drawing hundreds of fans of comics, anime, and gaming culture to the capital.
The event featured cosplay competitions, anime screenings, K-pop dance performances, and a marketplace for comic and anime merchandise. A professional cosplayer who has won awards at festivals in the CIS, the United Kingdom, Iceland, and Turkey appeared as the festival’s special guest.
The U.S. Embassy in Baku also joined the celebration. Its press officer highlighted the cultural significance of comics, noting that characters such as Superman, created by American teenagers in 1938, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has earned more than $32 billion worldwide, demonstrate U.S. creativity and innovation.
According to the schedule, the festival opened with a ceremony at 1 p.m., followed by solo and group cosplay shows, and an autograph session with the guest cosplayer.
