Electric cars have become increasingly common on the streets of Baku, with many now used in the city’s taxi fleet. But a growing concern among drivers — and a heated topic on social media — is the cost and lifespan of the batteries that power them.
Speaking to Khazar TV, electric vehicle repair specialist Subkhan Abdullazade warned that many of the failures stem from poor usage habits. Fast charging, exposure to extreme heat or cold, and repeatedly draining or fully charging batteries can all shorten their life cycle. To extend performance, he advises keeping the charge at mid-levels whenever possible.
Unlike conventional car parts, batteries for modern EVs are imported in full packs rather than serviced in parts. That makes replacement costly: new units range from 8,500 to 34,000 manats, often exceeding the residual value of the vehicle itself.
Abdullazade noted that hybrid and plug-in hybrid models face lower expenses, while older EVs use cheaper battery systems — though sourcing those parts is becoming increasingly difficult.
As Azerbaijan’s electric fleet grows, the high cost of maintenance could deter potential buyers, turning what was once seen as a cost-saving investment into a long-term financial burden.
