Transit cargo flows through Azerbaijan – excluding pipeline transport – have increased 2.5 times in 2024 compared to 2019, Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov told parliament during the first reading of the 2026 state budget bill, Report writes.
According to the minister, the jump in transit volumes reflects major improvements made in the country’s transport sector:

“Thanks to upgrades to existing infrastructure in recent years and expanded capacity at the Alat International Sea Trade Port, transit cargo volumes reached 14.5 million tons in 2024 – a 2.5-fold increase compared to 2019,” Jabbarov said.
Strategic infrastructure investments continue
Jabbarov also highlighted the ongoing $407 million Caspian Sea desalination project, calling it an important step for:
strengthening Azerbaijan’s water security,
facilitating technology transfer,
and attracting foreign investment.
The project forms part of broader efforts to modernize critical infrastructure and support long-term sustainable growth.
