Azerbaijan’s population reached 10,239,094 as of June 1, 2025, according to the State Statistical Committee. The figure reflects an increase of 14,205 people, or 0.14%, since the start of the year.
The urban-rural split remains nearly even, with 54.4% of the population living in cities and 45.6% in rural areas. Men account for 49.8% of the population, while women represent 50.2%.
Births, Deaths, and Natural Growth
In the first five months of 2025, 38,836 births were registered across the country, marking a decline in the birth rate from 9.8 to 9.2 per 1,000 people compared to the same period last year. Boys made up 53.2% of newborns and girls 46.8%. The country also recorded 1,264 sets of twins and 57 sets of triplets.
Meanwhile, 25,148 deaths were reported from January to May 2025, bringing the mortality rate down slightly from 6.0 to 5.9 per 1,000 people year-over-year.
Marriages on the Rise, Divorces Decline
Marriage rates showed a noticeable uptick. A total of 19,783 marriages were officially registered, with the marriage rate increasing from 4.1 to 4.7 per 1,000 people compared to the same period in 2024. Conversely, divorces declined slightly, with 8,678 cases reported — bringing the divorce rate down from 2.1 to 2.0 per 1,000 people.
The data was compiled and released by the regional and city civil registry offices under the Ministry of Justice.
Demographic Outlook
While population growth continues steadily, experts note that the declining birth rate and modest reduction in mortality reflect broader demographic trends. The increase in marriages and drop in divorces may also point to a shift in social dynamics and family structures across Azerbaijan.
