Azerbaijan’s young programmers have made their mark on the global stage, earning one silver and two bronze medals at the 37th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2025), held this year in Sucre, the capital of Bolivia.
According to the Ministry of Science and Education, Ayhan Damirli, an 11th-grade student at the Zarifa Aliyeva Lyceum in Baku, secured the silver medal. Meanwhile, Hasan Valiyev, a 10th-grade student from School No. 157 in Baku, and Elvin Imanli, an 11th-grader at the Baku Physics-Mathematics and IT-focused Lyceum, both earned bronze medals. Ali Aliyev, an 11th-grade student at Ankara Lyceum in Baku, received an honorary mention for his performance.
This year’s results mark a historic achievement for Azerbaijan. With one silver, two bronze medals, and a special prize, the national team delivered its best performance to date at the IOI. Notably, two Azerbaijani students ranked among the top 100 participants worldwide.
Azerbaijan has been participating in the IOI since 1994. Between 1994 and 1999, the country earned 2 medals, followed by 2 medals in 2000–2009, 1 medal in 2010–2019, and a remarkable 11 medals between 2020 and 2025.
The latest success underscores the growing strength of Azerbaijan’s education system in STEM fields, especially in computer science and programming.
