The chairman of the REAL Party, Natig Jafarli, has sharply criticized Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, describing it as a prolonged conflict that has turned into a serious political and reputational liability for President Vladimir Putin and his inner circle.
In a Facebook post, Jafarli noted that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine has already lasted longer than the Great Patriotic War, calling this fact alone a troubling signal for the Russian leadership.
According to him, the length of the war has become an obvious “anti-PR” factor that even Kremlin-aligned propagandists struggle to justify.
Jafarli said that Moscow is now attempting to promote new narratives, claiming that Ukrainians are a “brotherly people” and that Russia is not conducting a total war or deliberately targeting civilians. However, he stressed that such arguments collapse in the face of reality.
According to available estimates cited by the politician, more than 30,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed as a result of Russia’s actions, excluding the city of Mariupol, where the true death toll remains unknown. The overall economic damage inflicted on Ukraine, he added, has already exceeded $1 trillion.
Jafarli also offered a harsh historical assessment, stating that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – along with the failure to prevent this aggression – may ultimately be remembered as a “war of fools.”
“Future generations in both countries will curse this meaningless and bloody conflict,” he wrote, arguing that the war lacks strategic justification and will leave behind a heavy moral and political legacy for years to come.
