A U.S.-based Azerbaijani citizen, Sevindik Huseynov, is facing serious federal charges after allegedly orchestrating a massive $137 million healthcare fraud operation in California.
According to court documents from the Northern District of California, Huseynov is accused of submitting fake medical documents, referrals, and billing records to unlawfully obtain millions of dollars in insurance payouts.
Authorities say the scheme involved falsified paperwork and fraudulent claims linked to medical services that were never rendered.
Huseynov was apprehended while attempting to flee the country, raising concerns about a potential flight risk. The case is currently under investigation, and prosecutors are expected to push for detention pending trial.
The alleged fraud ranks among the largest healthcare-related scams in the region in recent years.
