Azerbaijani Gas to Start Flowing to Syria via Turkey

Starting August 2, Syria will begin receiving Azerbaijani natural gas via Turkey, with initial deliveries reaching 3.4 million cubic meters per day, according to Syria’s Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir.

The gas will be routed through Turkey’s Kilis province to Aleppo, with the supply aimed at producing around 900 megawatts of electricity, part of a regional cooperation effort to stabilize Syria’s energy sector.

Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar confirmed that the project is based on a swap agreement with Azerbaijan. He noted that pipeline construction on Turkish territory was completed in record time and that Qatar financed the project. Syria has also finished preparations to receive the gas.

Bayraktar said total planned deliveries would reach 6 million cubic meters per day, enabling the generation of up to 1,200 MW of electricity. He added that with this additional power, Syria’s electricity supply could increase from the current 3–4 hours per day to up to 10 hours.

A ceremony marking the launch of the gas flow will include the energy ministers of Qatar and Syria.
