Azerbaijani Envoy to UN: Double Standards Undermine International Obligations

NEW YORK, July 23 — Double standards and selective application of international law inevitably lead to systematic violations of global obligations, said Javid Ismayilov, Chargé d’Affaires of Azerbaijan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

Speaking at the UN Security Council’s high-level open debate on “Fostering International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and Peaceful Dispute Resolution,” Ismayilov emphasized that impunity for breaches of international law and the rise of ethno-nationalist ideologies are major barriers to global stability and cooperation.

“Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity is fundamental to preventing conflicts, rebuilding and maintaining peace, and fostering peaceful, mutually beneficial relations between peoples,” he stated. “It is also essential for promoting sustainable economic and social development.”

Ismayilov called for increased efforts to combat hate speech and eradicate intolerance, urging governments and stakeholders to be held accountable for spreading disinformation through coordinated global action.

He also underscored the need for sustained international support for countries engaged in post-conflict recovery and reconstruction, including mine clearance and rehabilitation.

“This support is critical for Azerbaijan, which continues to deal with the consequences of 30 years of aggression, ethnic cleansing, and occupation,” Ismayilov noted. “Azerbaijan remains committed to enhancing international cooperation and strengthening a more effective multilateral system that can meet its responsibilities.”

The diplomat’s remarks echo Baku’s ongoing appeals for greater international solidarity in addressing the aftermath of its decades-long conflict and efforts to reintegrate formerly occupied territories.
