The initialing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington on August 8 marks a historic milestone for the South Caucasus after decades of hostility and conflict, according to Elchin Amirbayov, special representative of Azerbaijan’s president.
Speaking to Israel’s i24 News, Amirbayov said the agreement was a major step in normalizing relations between the two countries. “The very act of initialing the agreement is significant progress,” he said.
“It is the result of constructive dialogue, the political will of both sides, and of course the support of several international partners. We especially value the personal contribution and efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump. If this process continues seriously and decisively, a new page may open in the history of the South Caucasus — one based on cooperation, stability and shared prosperity.”
Amirbayov also responded to questions about Azerbaijan’s growing mediating role in regional diplomacy, including between Iran and Israel. He emphasized that Baku has pursued a multi-vector foreign policy since independence in 1991.
“We build relations based on mutual respect and sovereignty, including with both Israel and Iran,” he said.
The remarks highlight Azerbaijan’s push to frame the Washington declaration as a turning point not only in its relations with Armenia but in the wider geopolitics of the South Caucasus, where great-power rivalries have long shaped outcomes.
