Azerbaijani Cultural Envoy in Italy Passes Away

The Azerbaijani State Committee on Work with the Diaspora has announced the passing of Mais Nuriyev, a renowned Italian choreographer of Azerbaijani origin, Honored Artist of Azerbaijan, and head of the Azeri Cultural Association in Italy.

Nuriyev was a professor at the Milan Conservatory and taught at the AIDA and Orizon Dance Academies, where he played a key role in promoting Azerbaijani culture and uniting the Azerbaijani community in Italy.

In a statement, the Committee emphasized that Nuriyev “represented Azerbaijani folk dance on world stages for many years and introduced audiences to our nation’s rich cultural heritage, history, and values through his professional artistry. His tireless teaching inspired many young choreographers who helped bring Azerbaijan’s cultural legacy to wider international audiences.”

Deeply respected in Italian artistic circles, Mais Nuriyev became an influential cultural bridge between Azerbaijan and Italy, fostering mutual understanding through art.

By decree of President Ilham Aliyev, Nuriyev was awarded the title Honored Artist of Azerbaijan, as well as the “Heydar Aliyev Centenary Medal (1923–2023)” and the Medal for Contribution to Diaspora Activity.
