A court in Baku has handed down a 16-year prison sentence to Shokhrat Mammadov, who was accused of carrying out tasks assigned by foreign intelligence services and committing high treason against the state.
According to APA, the verdict was announced at the Baku Military Court under the chairmanship of Judge Zaur Hajiyev.
Mammadov was detained during a special operation conducted by the State Security Service (SSS) in March of this year. He was charged under Article 274 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, which covers high treason.
Investigators said Mammadov acted deliberately “in the form of espionage,” undermining the sovereignty, territorial integrity, state security, and defense capacity of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
