Azerbaijan’s table tennis squads have made history at the III CIS Games in Gabala, with both the men’s and women’s teams advancing to the finals.
The men’s side secured its place after defeating Uzbekistan 2:0 in the semifinals, Report informs. They will now face Russia in what promises to be a high-stakes final.
Head coach Ramil Jafarov praised his players’ determination: “We prepared long and hard for this. Competing at home in front of our fans gave us confidence. Tomorrow we meet a strong Russian team we haven’t faced in years – the result will be interesting.”
On the women’s side, Azerbaijan edged Uzbekistan 2:1 in their semifinal clash, also earning a showdown with Russia for the gold.
The table tennis events at the CIS Games are being staged at the Gabala Olympic Sports Complex and include team, singles, doubles, and mixed doubles categories. The competition concludes on September 29.
