Azerbaijan Sees Sharp Rise in Chickenpox Cases Amid Concerns Over Public Health Response

According to official data from the State Statistics Committee shared with Report, Azerbaijan has recorded a significant increase in chickenpox infections during the first five months of 2025.

A total of 17,595 cases were reported from January to May, exceeding last year’s numbers for the same period by 2,189 cases.

Gender breakdown reveals more men affected, with 9,190 cases compared to 8,405 among women.

Of particular concern is the age distribution: children and teenagers under 17 account for the vast majority of cases—15,602—while adults aged 18 and over represent 1,993 cases.

This alarming surge raises questions about the effectiveness of public health measures and vaccination campaigns in Azerbaijan. Critics argue that insufficient awareness programs and limited access to vaccines may be contributing to the rapid spread of the disease. Additionally, the healthcare system’s preparedness to handle such outbreaks, especially among vulnerable young populations, has come under scrutiny.

As infections rise, calls are growing for more proactive government intervention to improve preventive strategies, enhance public education, and ensure wider vaccine availability to curb further spread of chickenpox.
