Azerbaijan Railways Explains Ticket Price Hike on Key Routes

BAKU — July 27, 2025 — The recent surge in ticket prices for the Baku–Balakan and Zagatala–Baku train routes has sparked public outcry, especially as the increase is most evident during weekends.

Passengers noted that ticket prices rose sharply from 22 to 25 manats specifically on Saturdays and Sundays, prompting criticism from travelers who regularly use these routes.

In response, Azerbaijan Railways CJSC issued a statement explaining the hike.

“Rail transport relies primarily on electricity and diesel fuel. Over the past six years, electricity prices have increased by more than 20%, and diesel fuel prices have surged by over 70%. Naturally, this has an impact on fare adjustments,” the statement said.
