Azerbaijan may revisit the idea of creating dedicated autodromes for car enthusiasts and professional drivers, as experts argue that such facilities could play a dual role in improving road safety and developing motorsport.
At present, Azerbaijan does not have permanent public autodromes where official races, drift events or professional driver training can be held. In contrast, similar facilities operate successfully in many countries, including Turkey, Russia and across Europe and Asia.
Industry specialists note that autodromes are both sports and commercial projects. International practice shows that such venues typically serve multiple functions: hosting motorsport competitions, training professional racing drivers, conducting advanced driving courses, and testing both standard and modified vehicles. Autodromes are also used for technical trials, including braking systems and vehicle performance assessments.
Experts warn that the lack of official tracks pushes some young drivers to test speed and driving skills on public roads, increasing the risk of traffic accidents. Transport analyst Arshad Huseynov says that creating regulated autodromes could significantly reduce illegal street racing by offering a controlled and safe alternative.
According to him, properly equipped autodromes operate under strict safety standards, including on-site emergency medical services, fire response teams and technical supervision. Moving high-risk driving activities off public streets could help raise overall driving culture and improve road safety outcomes.
Such facilities could also contribute to the professional development of drivers by offering specialized training beyond basic licensing requirements, ultimately benefiting everyday traffic conditions.
For now, however, there are no concrete plans. The Ministry of Youth and Sports has stated that the construction of autodromes is not currently included in the official agenda.
Despite this, experts believe the issue may return to policy discussions in the future, especially as interest in motorsport grows and the need for safer road infrastructure becomes more pressing.
