Azerbaijan has begun exporting natural gas to Syria for the first time, marking a historic moment in the country’s energy export strategy and signaling the creation of a new energy corridor linking the South Caucasus with the Middle East.
The official launch took place during the inauguration of the Kilis–Aleppo border pipeline, which will transport Azerbaijani gas through Turkish territory into northern Syria. Azerbaijani Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov called the move a “crucial step toward regional energy integration and recovery,” stressing its geopolitical and humanitarian importance.
“This is more than just energy cooperation—it’s a contribution to peace, reconstruction, and economic revival in a war-torn region,” Jabbarov said.
Expanding Export Footprint
With Syria becoming the 14th country to import Azerbaijani gas, SOCAR—Azerbaijan’s state energy firm—is deepening its presence in the global energy market. SOCAR officials also confirmed plans to acquire stakes in new gas extraction projects and expand exports to additional countries.
Jabbarov, who also chairs SOCAR’s supervisory board, noted that initial deliveries will reach up to 1.2 billion cubic meters annually. He emphasized that the gas will be primarily used to power Syria’s struggling electricity sector, which has been crippled by over a decade of conflict.
Tripartite Energy Diplomacy
The project was enabled by a trilateral agreement between Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Syria, with Qatar also reportedly offering technical support. Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced the signing of a swap deal with SOCAR, enabling the transfer of Azerbaijani gas at the Kilis border station. Daily volumes are expected to reach 6 million cubic meters, monitored through Turkey’s Yavuzlu metering station.
Bayraktar praised Azerbaijan’s continued support and said the partnership demonstrates the strength of Turkish-Azerbaijani strategic ties.
A Lifeline for Syria
Syria’s Energy Minister Mohammad Al-Bashir expressed gratitude to both Azerbaijan and Turkey, stating that the gas supplies would play a vital role in stabilizing the country’s electricity generation and supporting economic recovery.
“This is a lifeline for millions of Syrians,” he said. “We see this as a turning point for Syria’s energy future.”
Regional Impact and Strategic Vision
Jabbarov underlined that the gas deal reflects the balanced and forward-looking foreign policy championed by President Ilham Aliyev. He said the move comes at a pivotal time for Syria and contributes to both national and regional energy security.
“It also proves that Azerbaijan is not only a reliable energy partner to Europe, but increasingly to the broader Middle East,” he added.
The minister also credited SOCAR for navigating complex logistical and commercial challenges, reinforcing Azerbaijan’s image as a trusted and capable global energy player.

Analysts say the launch of gas exports to Syria represents a strategic recalibration of Azerbaijan’s energy geography—extending its reach beyond traditional European markets and into the eastern Mediterranean and Arab world.
As Jabbarov concluded, “This is not just about energy flows—this is about building bridges, restoring lives, and shaping a new future through energy diplomacy.”
