Azerbaijan has officially joined the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade, following the approval of the law by President Ilham Aliyev.
The Rotterdam Convention, signed on September 10, 1998, in the Netherlands, is a key component of the global framework for the safe management of chemicals and waste.
It establishes a system for countries to exchange information on hazardous chemicals and pesticides traded internationally.
Under the convention, international trade in substances listed in Annex III can only occur with the prior informed consent (PIC) of the importing country.
This mechanism ensures that nations are fully aware of the potential risks before approving the import or export of such substances.
The main goal of the Rotterdam Convention is to promote shared responsibility and cooperation among member states in the trade of hazardous chemicals, protecting human health and the environment from potential harm.
It also seeks to encourage the environmentally sound use of these substances through information exchange and national-level decision-making on imports and exports.
