Azerbaijan Households Spend Half of Their Income on Food

Azerbaijanis allocated more than half of their retail spending to food products between January and November 2025, according to new data from the State Statistical Committee.

Retail outlets across the country sold 58.57 billion manats worth of goods during the 11-month period. Of that total, 31.94 billion manats came from food, beverages, and tobacco, while 26.63 billion manats came from non-food items.

In real terms, overall retail turnover increased by 3.7% year-on-year. Sales of food, beverages, and tobacco grew by 1.2%, whereas non-food goods saw stronger growth at 6.7%.

According to the data, 50.4% of consumer spending in the retail network went toward food products, 4.1% toward beverages and tobacco, and 14.9% toward textiles, clothing, and footwear.

Additional spending categories included:

  • 6% on gasoline and diesel fuel,

  • 4.8% on electrical goods and furniture,

  • 2.4% on pharmaceuticals and medical equipment,

  • 1.4% on computers, telecommunications devices, and printed products.

The remaining 16% covered other non-food categories.

The value of goods sold by private-sector retailers rose by 3.7% in real terms and accounted for 99.8% of total retail turnover.

Retail trade turnover increased by 7% among enterprises, 1.2% among individual entrepreneurs, and 4.8% across markets and fairs.

On average, consumers spent 519.9 manats per month in retail outlets during the reporting period – 283.5 manats on food, beverages, and tobacco, and 236.4 manats on non-food goods.
