Azerbaijani athletes continue to post strong results at the 3rd CIS Games, adding medals across swimming, shooting, taekwondo, boxing, and traditional sports while holding second place in the overall standings.
In Ganja, swimmer Ogtay Huseynov claimed gold in the men’s 400-meter individual medley, while teammates secured bronze in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay and another bronze in the 200-meter breaststroke through Yegor Maynitski. Russia and Kazakhstan took gold and silver, respectively, in the relay.
Azerbaijan’s chovgan team, competing in the national equestrian sport, notched its second straight victory in Sheki, defeating Kuwait 5–0 after an earlier 4–0 win over Kyrgyzstan. Finals are set for October 7.
In Gabala, Azerbaijani shooters added to the medal tally: Murtaza Novruzlu and Nermin Jafarova earned bronze in mixed trap, Javid Hasanov secured silver, and Daniella Ulanova took bronze in women’s skeet. Russian shooter German Telenin, who won gold, described the finals as “very tense,” crediting composure for his victory.
Taekwondo athletes closed their competitions in Mingachevir with an impressive haul: Vasif Selimov captured gold in the men’s 68kg class, while 10 others claimed bronze across various weight categories. The national taekwondo squad finished the Games with 22 medals in total.
Azerbaijani boxers also impressed in Yevlakh, where four advanced to the semifinals, guaranteeing at least bronze medals. Youth volleyball teams opened with victories: the U-17 boys swept Kyrgyzstan 3–0, following the U-15 girls’ 3–0 win over Tajikistan. Badminton matches began in Gabala, with Azerbaijan recording one mixed doubles victory.
As of September 30, Azerbaijan ranks second in the medal table with 7 gold, 18 silver, and 31 bronze. Russia leads comfortably with 47 golds, while Belarus holds third place. Athletes from seven countries have so far reached the podium. The Games conclude on October 8.
