Azerbaijan has officially set the retirement age for both men and women at 65, completing the final stage of a long-term pension reform scheduled to take effect in 2026.
Under the updated rules, the retirement age for women will reach 65 years as of July 1, aligning it with the retirement age for men, which remains unchanged at the same level.
The equalization follows a gradual reform process launched in 2017. According to Article 7 of the Law “On Labor Pensions,” the retirement age for men was increased by six months annually between July 1, 2017, and July 1, 2021, while the retirement age for women has been rising by six months each year from July 1, 2017, through July 1, 2027.
The legislation also предусматривает mandatory monthly payments intended to compensate citizens for lost wages and other income prior to the formal assignment of a labor pension.
Under the law, individuals whose accumulated pension capital is sufficient to secure a pension at or above the minimum level are eligible to retire regardless of their length of insurance contributions. If the accumulated capital is insufficient, a minimum insurance record of 25 years is required, with exceptions for those who were granted pensions before July 1, 2017.
The reform brings Azerbaijan’s pension system closer to international practices, as many countries move toward unified retirement ages amid demographic pressures and rising life expectancy.
