BAKU, July 17, 2025 — Azerbaijan has significantly increased its wheat imports in the first half of the year, highlighting a growing reliance on foreign grain to meet domestic demand.
According to the State Customs Committee, the country imported 602,255 metric tons of wheat between January and June, valued at $130.66 million. This marks a 56% increase in volume and a 53.4% rise in cost compared to the same period in 2024.
Wheat imports accounted for 1.1% of Azerbaijan’s total import expenditures during this period.
The surge in imports comes amid broader concerns about food security, regional supply chain shifts, and volatile grain prices on international markets. It also reflects Azerbaijan’s ongoing efforts to stabilize domestic food supplies and maintain bread price controls, especially in light of recent inflationary pressures.
Government officials have not yet commented on whether the increase is part of a long-term procurement strategy or a short-term response to market disruptions.
