Police in Azerbaijan’s Tovuz district have prevented an attempted underage marriage involving a 14-year-old girl, authorities said on Monday.
According to local media reports citing law enforcement officials, the wedding ceremony was being organized by the girl’s stepfather.
The bride, born in 2011, was allegedly being forced into marriage with a man born in 1992, creating an age gap of 19 years.
The incident occurred in the village of Yukhari Oysuzlu, where police received information about preparations for the ceremony. Officers intervened before the wedding could take place and summoned the parents of both sides to the local police department.
Authorities said preventive discussions were held with the families, legal requirements were explained, and administrative protocols were drawn up and submitted to court.
By court decision, one of the parents was sentenced to one month of administrative arrest. An investigation into the case is ongoing.
