Armenian Tycoon Samvel Karapetyan Appeals from Detention with Economic Vision

YEREVAN, September 8

Businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan, head of the Tashir Group, has issued a public message from a detention facility, outlining what he described as urgent measures to improve Armenia’s economic and social situation.

In a post shared via social media, Karapetyan pointed to Armenia’s chronic trade imbalance, noting that the country annually imports about $4 billion more in goods than it exports. He argued that this gap offers opportunities for expanding domestic production, attracting investment, and supporting farmers.

Karapetyan called for greater focus on agriculture and the food industry, sectors he believes could quickly generate jobs and provide farmers with a sustainable income.

“Even under today’s difficult conditions there are solutions that can be implemented swiftly and effectively,” he wrote. “Such programs can transform quality of life, curb migration, and guarantee work for everyone. We will do it our way: jobs for all, prosperity for all.”

The statement comes while Karapetyan remains in pre-trial detention as part of a high-profile investigation launched earlier this year. Armenian authorities accuse him of financial misconduct, though his supporters insist the case is politically motivated. His continued ability to communicate with the public has drawn both attention and controversy, highlighting the businessman’s enduring influence in Armenia’s political and economic debate.
