All public buses in Baku will be equipped with NFC payment technology by the end of this year, according to K Group LLC, the operator of the city’s Bakı Kart system.
The new system will allow passengers to use contactless payment options – such as bank cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay – seamlessly across both the metro and bus networks. NFC (Near Field Communication) technology enables instant fare payments and even allows riders to complete a trip when their card balance is temporarily low, with the option to top up later.
Currently, NFC payments are already accepted at all Baku Metro stations. The full rollout across bus routes will create a unified, cashless payment network for the city’s public transport.
Earlier, Bakı Kart also launched QR-based fare payment, enabling passengers to pay directly through a mobile app without a physical card – a step that complemented Azerbaijan’s ongoing push toward smart urban mobility and digital infrastructure.
