President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with U.S. President Donald Trump on January 22 in Davos, where the two leaders discussed regional peace efforts and the future development of bilateral relations.
During the meeting, both sides expressed satisfaction with the growing cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United States across a range of areas following President Trump’s return to office. The talks highlighted the positive dynamics in political dialogue and practical engagement between Baku and Washington.
President Aliyev emphasized the importance of the agreements reached on August 8 last year in Washington aimed at advancing the peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia. He underlined President Trump’s role in facilitating the process, describing it as a significant contribution to regional stability.
The Azerbaijani leader noted that normalization efforts between Azerbaijan and Armenia have already produced tangible results. According to Aliyev, the existence of peace in the region is reflected not only politically, but also economically, including the emergence of trade relations between the two countries.
In this context, he pointed to Azerbaijan’s export of petroleum products to Armenia, as well as the transit of imported grain to Armenia through Azerbaijani territory.
The meeting also addressed regional connectivity projects. President Aliyev stressed the strategic importance of the Zangezur corridor and the TRIPP initiative in enhancing transport links and strengthening economic integration across the region.
The two presidents further discussed the role of the Peace Council established under the chairmanship of the U.S. president. The council was described as an important platform for promoting peace in the Middle East and contributing to the resolution of global conflicts. Azerbaijan’s invitation to join the council as a founding member was seen as a reflection of the strategic partnership between Baku and Washington and Azerbaijan’s broader role in promoting international peace.
Concluding the talks, the leaders exchanged views on the prospects for bilateral relations, noting that mutual visits and contacts at various levels play an important role in deepening cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United States.
