CHOLPON-ATA, Kyrgyzstan, September 8
Azerbaijan’s wrestlers delivered a commanding performance at the Turkic States Universiade, finishing the tournament with eight medals — four gold, two silver, and two bronze. The results once again underscored the country’s traditional strength in both Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling.
On the final day of competition, Roman Kerimov (67 kg, Greco-Roman), Ashraf Ashirov (86 kg, freestyle), and Yusif Dursunov (125 kg, freestyle) all captured gold medals, while Musa Agayev secured silver in the 65 kg freestyle division.
The earlier rounds had already set the tone for success: Vedat Gasymli claimed the 60 kg Greco-Roman title, Ali Guliyev took silver at 97 kg freestyle, and bronze medals went to Ramik Geybatov (74 kg freestyle) and Javad Mammadov (77 kg Greco-Roman).
With these results, the Azerbaijani Greco-Roman team topped the overall standings, while the freestyle squad placed second.
“Wrestling remains the backbone of Azerbaijani sport, and these young athletes continue the tradition of bringing home victories on the international stage,” the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation said in a statement.
The Universiade in Cholpon-Ata, bringing together athletes from Turkic-speaking nations, has provided a platform for emerging talent as well as established competitors. For Azerbaijan, the eight-medal finish reinforced the country’s position as a powerhouse in the sport ahead of upcoming European and world-level championships.
