Lavish Headstones Spark Debate Over Standards in Azerbaijan

Calls are growing in Azerbaijan for greater oversight and standardization of headstones, amid concerns that luxury spending has increasingly extended into funerary practices, Report have noted.

At a recent public discussion on reducing extravagance at weddings and funerals, Fariz Khalili, chairman of the “Miras” Public Union and a PhD in history, said that existing standards for making headstones are often ignored. “I believe a monitoring and research group should be established in this field,” Khalili stated.

Investigative journalist Dilgam Ahmed echoed the concern, stressing that the pursuit of lavishness has also reached cemeteries. He pointed to Turkey’s approach, where uniform regulations for headstones are in place. “We should follow their example,” Ahmed said.

The debate reflects a broader push to curb social wastefulness, with community leaders urging practical reforms to ease financial burdens on families while maintaining cultural respect for the deceased.
