Early Fruits Hit Baku Markets – but Prices Leave Shoppers Stunned

Baku, September 6, 2025

Early autumn fruits have arrived on Azerbaijan’s markets, but soaring prices are keeping many shoppers at bay, according to a recent ATV video report.

Pomegranates, persimmons, and quinces are already on sale in the capital, with prices ranging from 5 to 8 manats per kilogram. Many buyers say the cost is simply too high.

“The pomegranate has just appeared, but its seeds are still dry. Seven manats per kilo is far too expensive. If the price were lower, I’d buy it for my family,” one customer told ATV.

Vendors explain that the steep prices reflect limited supply at the start of the season.

“Persimmons and pomegranates are only just coming in, so that’s why the price is high. Soon it will drop to 1.5–2 manats,” one trader said.

The fruits are sourced from different regions: pomegranates from Sabirabad, Kurdamir, and Goychay; persimmons from Goranboy, Tartar, Barda, and Agdash. Market experts note that such seasonal price hikes are temporary. Sellers expect the situation to stabilize within 20 days, making the fruits affordable for a wider range of consumers.
