YEREVAN/BAKU September 6, 2025
For the first time, the aircraft carrying Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan flew through Azerbaijani airspace during his official trip abroad on August 30, returning overnight on September 6.
The announcement came from Pashinyan’s press secretary, Nazeli Baghdasaryan, who confirmed that Yerevan had formally requested permission from Baku following the Washington peace understandings reached on August 8. Azerbaijan granted the request.
“We view this as a practical step toward unblocking regional communications, advancing the peace agenda, and fostering an atmosphere of mutual trust,” Baghdasaryan said, as quoted by Armenian media.
She added that Azerbaijani planes have long been using Armenian airspace to maintain the air corridor between mainland Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
The overflight marks a rare, tangible example of cooperation between the two countries, as negotiations continue on border delimitation, infrastructure, and the terms of a future peace treaty.
