Zangezur Link Could Make Azerbaijan the Heart of Eurasian Trade

Baku, September 5, 2025

The Middle Corridor is set for a dramatic expansion in the coming decades, according to forecasts from the World Bank, the EBRD, and the OECD. By 2030, freight volumes along the route are expected to reach 11 million tons, and by 2040 the corridor’s capacity could climb to 865,000 TEU, Trend reported.

Zangezur Corridor as a Key Link

Bahktiyar Hajiyev, head of public relations at Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, told Trend that the opening of the Zangezur Corridor will play a decisive role in meeting this growing demand. He said the corridor’s annual freight potential is estimated at 15 million tons, making it a vital extension of the Middle Corridor.

Boosting Value and Diversification

According to Hajiyev, the Zangezur link adds significant value not only to the Middle Corridor but also to the North–South transport route. By offering an alternative to existing routes, it enhances diversification and positions Azerbaijan as a major logistics hub in Eurasia.

Expanding Routes for India and Iran

Hajiyev also underlined that the Zangezur Corridor will strengthen connectivity for India and Iran, allowing cargo to move northward through Azerbaijan. Iranian shipments, for example, could be rerouted through Nakhchivan into Turkey and onward to Northern Europe.
