Fresh details have emerged suggesting that Russia, alongside India, played a behind-the-scenes role in blocking Azerbaijan’s accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
Diplomatic Sources
According to information obtained by APA from diplomatic sources, the decision to prevent Azerbaijan’s membership was not solely India’s initiative. The Russian Foreign Ministry is said to have taken an active part in the process.
Russia–India Understanding
The issue was reportedly discussed during political consultations between Moscow and New Delhi, with both sides reaching a mutual understanding. Publicly, however, India was placed at the forefront, while Russia stayed in the shadows.
Signal to Beijing
Observers note that such a move by Russia could be interpreted as a sign of disrespect toward China. Beijing, in line with the “Shanghai spirit,” has supported the enlargement of the organization and welcomed Azerbaijan’s candidacy. By obstructing the bid together with India at the recent Beijing summit, both Moscow and New Delhi are seen as undermining China’s position.
