BAKU — September 4, 2025.
The Shah Deniz consortium has awarded a $321 million contract to Azfen, the Azerbaijan–Turkey joint venture, to fabricate the 8,500-tonne topsides for the Shah Deniz Compression (SDC) platform, BP Azerbaijan said. Work will be carried out at Azfen’s Bayil (Sabael district) yard using domestic infrastructure and labor.
Construction of the topsides is slated to start in Q4 2025 and finish by end-2028. BP said the scope covers construction, assembly, installation and integration, with more than 3,000 workers involved—over 90% of them local specialists.
“This award builds on Azfen’s proven experience delivering previous topsides projects in Azerbaijan,” said Ewan (Yuan) Drummond, BP’s senior vice-president for projects.
The SDC platform – Phase 3 of Shah Deniz—was sanctioned in June with a $2.9 billion final investment decision. Equipped with four 11-MW compressors, SDC will capture low-pressure gas from the Alpha and Bravo platforms for compression and export to the Sangachal terminal, extending field life and boosting recovery.
BP and partners have said the phase aims to add around 50 bcm of gas and 25 million barrels of condensate to output as it comes online from 2028–2030.
