How the Zangezur Corridor Could Boost the Middle Corridor

BAKU — September 3, 2025.

The Middle Corridor, linking Asia to Europe through Central Asia and the South Caucasus, is poised for a major upgrade with the future opening of the Zangezur Corridor, Azerbaijani MP Mushfiq Jafarov told Oxu.Az.

The Middle Corridor, formally launched in 2014 with the participation of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Georgia, has since expanded to include Ukraine, Romania and Poland. The route begins at the China–Kazakhstan border, crosses the Caspian Sea, passes through Azerbaijan and Georgia, and stretches onward to Europe.

Jafarov underlined that the project is not only an economic lifeline but also carries significant political weight. “The initiative, part of China’s Belt and Road vision, now spans 65 countries and 40% of global GDP. According to the World Bank, investments along the corridor already total $575 billion,” he noted.

Zangezur as a new link

The MP emphasized that new transport infrastructure in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories, including the Zangezur Corridor, will open an important new branch of the Middle Corridor. “By developing major transport and transnational energy projects, Azerbaijan will strengthen the corridor’s potential and increase both political and investor support,” he said.

With the right political decisions and investments, Jafarov estimated that trade volumes along the corridor could triple by 2030, while transit times for cargo could be cut in half.
