BAKU, August 22 – A disturbing new craze is sweeping through Azerbaijan: young men are deliberately injuring their ears to mimic the look of professional wrestlers and MMA fighters. Social media accounts now openly advertise “ear-breaking services,” offering to deform one ear for around 70 manats ($41).
At first glance, it may seem like a bizarre fad. But experts warn this is more than a passing trend — it is a symptom of a deeper social and psychological crisis.
Manufactured Masculinity
Psychologist Elnur Rustamov speaking to Media.Az, argues that the phenomenon reflects an identity struggle among young people. Instead of achieving recognition through sports, culture, or education — paths that require discipline and effort — some seek shortcuts. A scarred ear becomes a cheap stand-in for bravery, toughness, and masculinity.
The Social Media Effect
Platforms like TikTok and Instagram amplify the craze. When broken ears are presented as a “status symbol,” teenagers rush to copy it. What once was an organic mark of combat sports is now commodified, commercialized, and sold to impressionable youth.
Health at Risk
Medical professionals caution that such injuries don’t heal harmlessly. They can cause chronic infections, disfigurement, and long-term hearing problems. A quick fix for “street credibility” today could mean disability tomorrow.
A Deeper Crisis
The trend is a warning sign of broader issues: weak role models, low self-esteem, and a lack of constructive outlets for young people. Without opportunities for real achievement, some turn to radical and dangerous forms of self-expression.
The Way Forward
The solution is not simply cracking down on underground “ear-breaking.” It is about creating real alternatives — sports programs, creative initiatives, and community projects where young people can channel their energy into meaningful accomplishment.
The “broken ear” craze is not just about body modification. It is a mirror reflecting the social emptiness many youths feel. If that emptiness is not filled with healthier values, destructive trends will only grow stronger.
