Washington, DC, August 12
The Trump–Putin summit in Alaska was more than a geopolitical spectacle — it created a ripple that extends all the way to the South Caucasus, where Azerbaijan stands to gain significantly from the outcomes.
Symbolism of Alaska
Choosing Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage as the summit venue reflects more than logistics — it’s a strategic statement. Holding the meeting on U.S. soil amid lingering ICC jurisdiction concerns lends both symbolism and security to the event. Alaska’s historical ties to Russia add a layer of geopolitical irony that hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Enter TRIPP: The Zangezur Corridor
A lasting achievement from the summit is the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) — also known as the Zangezur Corridor. The U.S. has secured exclusive development rights to this route through southern Armenia for 99 years, operating under Armenian law.
The corridor will connect mainland Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave and onward to Turkey, bypassing traditional routes through Russia or Iran. Iran’s foreign ministry has already voiced concerns over its proximity to Iranian borders, underscoring the route’s strategic importance.
Iranian and Russian Reactions
Iran quickly objected, warning the project undermines its regional influence. Tehran’s statements emphasized security risks, while Russia — once the primary mediator in the Caucasus — now faces a diminished role. Analysts see this as a shift away from the Moscow-centric security model, replaced by direct U.S. engagement.
Benefits for Azerbaijan
Strategic transit hub: The corridor cements Azerbaijan’s position as a vital link between Asia and Europe.
Security leverage: U.S. involvement offers additional deterrence against potential coercion from neighboring powers.
Diplomatic boost: The Washington peace declaration signals growing recognition of Azerbaijan as a key regional partner.
A senior Azerbaijani diplomat described the deal as “a transformational milestone” that brings both nations closer to a final peace accord after decades of frozen conflict.
