BILESUVAR, Azerbaijan — A sudden drop in water levels has led to mass fish deaths at the Mahmudchala Hunting Farm in Bilesuvar District, residents told Report.
Locals say the problem began several days ago, when water in the area fell sharply, leaving fish stranded and unable to survive.
The Ministry of Agriculture confirmed the incident, attributing the losses to the opening of a dam located in front of the Salyan–Mugan transmission collector. This action restored the flow of water from the collector into the Caspian Sea.
“As a result, a difference in water levels between the Mahmudchala hunting farm and the collector has caused backflow toward the collector,” the ministry said in an official statement. “During this process, some fish have been carried with the water toward the collector, leading to partial mortality.”
Officials did not provide figures on the total number of fish lost but said the phenomenon is linked directly to changes in water management rather than pollution or disease.
The ministry added that such incidents highlight the need for coordinated water regulation to prevent further ecological damage to fish habitats in the region.
