Balıkesir, August 10 – A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey’s Balıkesir province at 19:53 local time, with the epicenter in the Sındırgı district, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported. The tremor was also felt strongly in Istanbul and Izmir.
Authorities confirmed that one person was killed and 29 others injured. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, speaking from the quake zone, said none of the injured were in critical condition.
Search and rescue operations have been completed in the affected building, Yerlikaya noted. Sixteen rural neighborhoods reported collapsed structures — 12 of them abandoned, and four inhabited. Residents of the damaged occupied homes managed to escape on their own.
“In 61 rural neighborhoods, aside from these collapsed buildings, there are no other cases of destruction. At the moment, there is no building where search and rescue operations are ongoing,” the minister stated.
