Baku / Kyiv, August 10 – Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone conversation today, addressing Russia’s recent strikes on energy facilities in Ukraine linked to Azerbaijan.

The talks focused on Russian attacks against a SOCAR oil depot in Odesa and gas infrastructure carrying Azerbaijani gas to Ukraine. Both leaders condemned the actions of the Russian Armed Forces.

According to Caliber.Az, citing reliable sources, if Moscow continues targeting Azerbaijani economic interests, Baku may consider lifting its embargo on supplying weapons from its stockpiles to Ukraine.

Russian forces have recently intensified strikes on Azerbaijani energy assets in Ukraine, forcing Baku to weigh retaliatory measures — a move that could further deepen the already strained relationship between the two countries.

The latest escalation occurred overnight on August 7–8, when Russian drones struck a SOCAR oil depot in Ukraine’s Odesa region. Five Shahed kamikaze drones were directed at the facility, sparking a fire and damaging a diesel pipeline. Four SOCAR employees sustained serious injuries.

This was the second attack in recent weeks on Azerbaijani-linked infrastructure in Ukraine. Earlier, Russian forces targeted a gas distribution station near Orlovka — a critical component of the Trans-Balkan Gas Pipeline, through which Azerbaijani gas began flowing into Ukraine on June 28.

With Azerbaijani energy infrastructure increasingly in Russia’s crosshairs, any decision by Baku to supply arms to Ukraine would mark a significant shift in regional dynamics, further complicating Moscow’s position in the South Caucasus and beyond.
