The Russian Federation is interested in creating a zone of stability and prosperity in the South Caucasus, and sees comprehensive normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia — taking into account the interests of both nations — as one of the key conditions for achieving that goal.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova made the statement while commenting on the agreement reached by the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington on August 8.

“We consistently support all efforts that contribute to achieving this objective, which is crucial for regional security. In this regard, the meeting of the South Caucasus leaders in Washington, mediated by the American side, deserves a positive assessment. We hope this step will help advance the peace agenda,” Zakharova said.

She stressed that signing and bringing into force a peace and interstate relations agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia will be of decisive importance for establishing lasting peace.

“The reconciliation of the two countries should be integrated into the regional context and based on a balance of interests, with unconditional respect for the priorities of the parties and neighboring states,” she concluded.
